In post-Roe America, voters understand what is at stake. Americans know they lost constitutional rights that had been protected for more than 50 years.

On June 24, 2022, we became less free.

Even at this challenging time, we have the opportunity, even in very conservative states, to win back reproductive rights. The majority of voters support some access to abortion. Using a data-driven approach, we can identify shared values in each state and support ballot initiatives that protect women’s freedom and autonomy.

The ballot referendum process allows voters to speak directly on an issue when their elected representatives are beholden to special interests. Many groups focus on electing pro-choice candidates; our focus is on prioritizing state ballot initiatives and constitutional amendments.

In 2022, Families United for Freedom worked in four states: Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan and Montana. Working in partnership with in-state advocates, we successfully protected reproductive freedom in all four. In the coming years, we hope to work with local coalitions in numerous states to rebuild pro-choice voting blocs and win back freedom for American women living in states with little or no access to abortion care.
